How much SOL is locked in your Solana wallet right now?
How much SOL is locked in your Solana wallet right now?
Short answer: more than you think. If you've been active on Solana for 3+ months, you likely have anywhere from 0.05 to 3 SOL locked in empty token accounts you've never closed. This article breaks down real numbers from 9,903 wallets that have run SolDuster to reclaim theirs.
The distribution
We ran the numbers across 9,903 unique wallets that have used SolDuster since launch. Recoverable SOL per wallet, broken down by percentile:
| Percentile | SOL locked | USD (@ $200/SOL) |
|---|---|---|
| P10 (bottom 10%) | 0.004 | $0.80 |
| P25 | 0.018 | $3.60 |
| P50 (median) | 0.041 | $8.20 |
| P75 | 0.114 | $22.80 |
| P90 | 0.298 | $59.60 |
| P95 | 0.523 | $104.60 |
| P99 (top 1%) | 1.821 | $364.20 |
Absolute maximum observed in one wallet: 4.7 SOL (a sniper-bot operator with 2,318 empty ATAs from a year of memecoin farming).
Why the distribution is skewed
The median wallet has ~0.04 SOL locked (20 empty ATAs). But the top 10% of active traders have 0.3+ SOL locked, and the top 1% have over 1.8 SOL. This is because:
- Memecoin traders churn through positions much faster than passive holders. Every position opened = one new ATA created = 0.00204 SOL committed.
- Pump.fun graduates thousands of tokens per week, most of which end up worthless. Every trader who bought a piece has an empty ATA locked to it now.
- Sniper bots specifically operate multiple wallets to distribute risk — each wallet accumulates its own dust pile.
Real user profiles
We anonymized the type of activity for the top 3 recoveries observed:
Profile 1: Sniper bot operator
- 12 sub-wallets scanned in a single SolDuster session
- 2,318 total empty ATAs across the fleet
- 4.7 SOL recovered (~$940)
- Activity: pump.fun new-launch sniping, average 6-8 positions per hour per wallet, most losing
Profile 2: Memecoin degen (1 main wallet)
- 1 wallet, 892 empty ATAs
- 1.82 SOL recovered (~$364)
- Activity: manual trading across pump.fun, Raydium, Meteora, with heavy rotation
Profile 3: Long-tail airdrop hunter
- 3 wallets, 471 empty ATAs
- 0.96 SOL recovered (~$192)
- Activity: claimed dozens of small airdrops over 2 years, never held any of them, ATAs stayed open
What about "passive" wallets?
Passive users (bought SOL, held, maybe staked, maybe used one or two tokens) usually have very little to recover — 0.01 to 0.05 SOL. The rent mechanic only starts to matter when you're actively creating new ATAs frequently.
Interestingly, NFT collectors also accumulate ATAs — every NFT is an SPL token with its own ATA. NFT collectors who've held and traded many NFTs over the years can have 100+ empty NFT ATAs locked, worth 0.2+ SOL in rent.
Aggregate: how much SOL is locked network-wide?
Across all wallets on Solana (not just SolDuster users), rough back-of-envelope estimate:
- ~40 million active Solana wallets
- Average 15-25 empty ATAs per active wallet (median-heavy)
- 15 * 40M * 0.00204 = ~1.2 million SOL locked network-wide
At $200/SOL, that's $240 million of user funds sitting in dead accounts, invisible in every mainstream wallet UI.
