NFT rent recovery on Solana: what's closable, what's not, and how much you can reclaim

Every NFT on Solana is technically an SPL token with a supply of 1. That means it lives in an Associated Token Account (ATA) in your wallet — with the same 0.00203928 SOL rent-exempt deposit as any other token. When you sell/transfer/burn the NFT, that ATA doesn't auto-close.

If you've minted, held, or traded NFTs on Solana, you have SOL locked in dead NFT accounts. Here's the full landscape.

The 3 things that make up an NFT on Solana

Understanding what you can and can't close requires knowing the anatomy:

  1. The Mint account — the on-chain definition of the NFT itself. Owned by the mint authority (Metaplex or a custom program). You cannot close this. It doesn't belong to you.
  2. The Metadata account (Metaplex) — holds the name, image URI, attributes. Owned by Metaplex Token Metadata program. You cannot close this either.
  3. Your Token Account (ATA) — this is YOUR account holding the balance of 1 (when you own the NFT) or 0 (when you've transferred/sold). This is what you can close.

When you sell an NFT on Magic Eden or Tensor, the platform transfers the NFT out of your ATA (balance goes to 0). Your ATA stays open. The 0.00204 SOL deposit stays locked.

What you can reclaim

Every NFT you've ever held (and no longer own) has an empty ATA in your wallet. Multiply by the number of NFTs you've cycled through:

At $200/SOL, a 1000-position NFT trader has ~$400 sitting in dead NFT ATAs.

What you cannot reclaim

How to close NFT ATAs

The instruction is identical to regular token account close: closeAccount (opcode 9).

CLI

# List all your token accounts (NFTs included)
spl-token accounts --owner <YOUR_WALLET>

# Close a specific empty NFT ATA
spl-token close-account --address <NFT_ATA_ADDRESS>

Batched via tools

Special case: burning an unwanted NFT

If you own a rug NFT that has no value and you want to reclaim the 0.00204 SOL rent, you need to burn the NFT first (destroy the token to make balance = 0), then close the ATA.

Metaplex offers a Burn instruction for this:

import { createBurnNftInstruction } from '@metaplex-foundation/mpl-token-metadata';

const burnIx = createBurnNftInstruction({
  metadata: metadataPda,
  owner: wallet,
  mint: nftMint,
  tokenAccount: ataAddress,
  masterEditionAccount: masterEditionPda,
  splTokenProgram: TOKEN_PROGRAM_ID,
});

// After burn, the ATA balance is 0, and you can close it
const closeIx = createCloseAccountInstruction(ataAddress, wallet, wallet);

Both sol-incinerator.com and modern versions of SolDuster bundle these into a single transaction.

What about the Metaplex "burn and close" instruction?

Metaplex added a specialized instruction (BurnV1) that atomically burns the NFT AND closes all associated accounts, returning more than 0.00204 SOL (it also refunds the metadata account rent, which is significantly larger — ~0.005-0.008 SOL depending on metadata size).

This is powerful: for a wallet with 500 worthless NFTs, using BurnV1 recovers ~2.5 SOL vs ~1.0 SOL from just closing the ATAs. It requires burning the NFTs (destroying them irrevocably), so only do this for genuinely worthless assets.

Tools that support this: - Sol Incinerator (original) - Underdog Protocol tools - Custom scripts using @metaplex-foundation/mpl-token-metadata

Compressed NFTs (cNFTs)

Compressed NFTs use a completely different model — they live in a Merkle tree, and users don't have per-NFT accounts. There's no per-cNFT rent to reclaim. The tree itself has rent, paid by whoever created the collection.

If you've received cNFTs (common for pump.fun graduate airdrops, some airdrop distributions), there's nothing to close for you. You can just ignore them.

Bottom line

If you've traded NFTs on Solana: - Every NFT you no longer own = 0.00204 SOL locked in an empty ATA - Close them the same way you close regular token ATAs - For worthless NFTs you'd rather burn: use BurnV1 for ~2× more recovery per NFT
