The 5-minute monthly Solana wallet cleanup checklist
The 5-minute monthly Solana wallet cleanup checklist
Active Solana users accumulate 20-100+ new empty token accounts per month. Each one locks 0.00204 SOL. This checklist takes under 5 minutes and reclaims the SOL, prevents junk from piling up, and keeps your wallet lean.
Set a monthly calendar reminder (first Sunday of every month works well). Follow the steps below.
Step 1 — Snapshot current state (30 seconds)
Go to https://solduster.com and paste your wallet address. You'll see: - Total recoverable SOL - Number of empty ATAs - Number of dust ATAs (with tiny balance, requires burn+close)
Screenshot this. It's your baseline for the month.
Step 2 — Reclaim empty ATAs (1 minute)
Connect your wallet in the same page, click "Recover". Sign the batched transaction(s) in Phantom/Solflare/Backpack. Done.
Alternatively:
- jup.ag/close — Jupiter's built-in tool
- spl-token close-account <ATA> via CLI (technical)
Whichever tool you use, the SOL lands back in your wallet immediately.
Step 3 — Burn dust in worthless tokens (1 minute)
Some rug tokens intentionally inject dust into your account after you've sold, specifically to block the close. Look for tokens with balances like 0.0001 or weird tiny amounts.
Two options:
- Ignore — if the amount is negligible and the token is legitimate, just leave it
- Burn — for confirmed rug/dead tokens, burn the dust with spl-token burn <ATA> <AMOUNT> then close the account
Sol Incinerator (sol-incinerator.com) and SolDuster's dust mode bundle burn+close in one instruction.
Step 4 — Check for repeat offenders (30 seconds)
Some tokens will keep airdropping dust into your (closed) ATA, re-opening it. If you see the same tokens showing up empty every month, they're doing this on purpose.
Options:
- Block-list them in your own workflow (spl-token approve --disable-close-authority)
- Just accept it — the rent cost is 0.00204 SOL per re-open, minor annoyance
- Report to Phantom/Solflare — they maintain block-lists of known scam tokens
Step 5 — Update your recovery snapshot (30 seconds)
Screenshot the "0 SOL recoverable" state at the end of the cleanup. Log the amount you recovered this month in a spreadsheet or notes app:
2026-09: 0.32 SOL recovered
2026-10: 0.48 SOL recovered (heavy trading month)
2026-11: 0.15 SOL recovered
...
Over a year of active trading, active users routinely reclaim 2-5 SOL total via this monthly discipline.
Bonus for sniper bot operators
If you run multiple wallets (10-20+), don't do this manually. Use:
- SolDuster multi-wallet flow — scans 5 wallets in one session (solduster.com)
- Cron script using
spl-tokenCLI — see Sniper bot wallet cleanup guide for a bash template
A cronned monthly cleanup across a 12-wallet fleet routinely reclaims 3-6 SOL per month with zero manual effort.
Extras (optional, once a quarter)
- NFT ATAs: run the same tool but include NFT accounts. If you no longer own an NFT you traded, its ATA still holds 0.00204 SOL locked.
- Burn genuinely worthless NFTs: Metaplex's
BurnV1returns the NFT ATA rent + metadata rent (~0.008 SOL vs 0.002). Usesol-incinerator.comif you want to bulk-burn. - Wrapped SOL (WSOL) leftover: some DEXs leave WSOL in a wrapper account. Closing it unwraps + reclaims rent in one go.
Time budget summary
| Step | Time |
|---|---|
| Snapshot | 30s |
| Reclaim empty ATAs | 1 min |
| Burn dust | 1 min |
| Check offenders | 30s |
| Update log | 30s |
| Total | ~4 min |
Multiply by 12 monthly cleanups per year = 48 minutes of maintenance. Average yearly recovery across active users: 1-3 SOL (~$200-600). Worth it.
